Our Intent
At Oakwood Junior School, we believe that every child has the power to make a positive difference to the world around them. Our aim is to develop environmentally responsible citizens who understand the importance of sustainability and feel empowered to take action both within school and beyond. Sustainability is woven throughout our curriculum, school environment and wider community, enabling children to develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to help create a more sustainable future.
Our Rationale
We recognise that today's children will inherit tomorrow's environmental challenges. As educators, we have a responsibility to help them understand these challenges while inspiring hope, action and responsibility. Through meaningful, hands-on experiences such as composting, growing food, recycling, litter picking, outdoor learning and environmental campaigns, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop a connection with nature and an understanding of how their choices impact the wider world.
Our approach goes beyond environmental education. We use sustainability as a vehicle to promote wellbeing, community engagement, leadership, responsibility and active citizenship. By embedding sustainable practices into everyday school life, we aim to create a culture where caring for the environment becomes second nature and every child understands that small actions can lead to significant change.
Our Vision
We strive to be a school where sustainability is not simply an initiative, but a way of thinking and living. Working alongside pupils, families, staff, local organisations and trust partners, we are committed to continually developing our sustainable practices and empowering the next generation to care for, protect and improve the world around them.
