Dear Parents / Carers

My first newsletter of the school year and already I’ve got quite a lot to write about. We’ve had a really positive start to the term – the children seem to have settled back into the school routine very quickly even after the long summer break. The children look really smart in their new school uniforms and well turned out. I know it’s an expensive time for parents but a big thank you for supporting our school uniform policy. Encouraging the children to wear shoes instead of trainers for school and adopting a uniform for PE does make a big difference.

Staffing
Mrs Miller has started her maternity leave and we have 2 new members of staff starting – Miss Dayman who is teaching a Year 5 class and Miss Chapman who will be working with groups of children in Year 3.
Each teacher this year will have some non-contact time during the school week to help with planning and preparation. As a result of this we have been able to introduce the teaching of French throughout school and two new teachers (Miss Connolly and Miss Hardy) will be working in Year 3 & 4 for one day a week each.
As a school we are very fortunate in having a great bunch of hardworking and dedicated staff who strive to give your child the best education we can so that they become successful learners. If you have any concerns or worries related to your child in school do please get in touch with either your child’s class teacher or myself. I would much prefer to deal with any problems when they arise rather than waiting until they become much more difficult to tackle.

Living and Learning Statement
At a staff meeting recently we were discussing what was important to us as a school and we came up with this statement:

If children live with tolerance, they learn to understand others

If children live with praise, they learn that their efforts are valued

If children live with approval, they learn to try their best

If children live with encouragement, they learn to take supported risks

If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to succeed

If children live with sharing, they learn to work together

If children live with honesty, they learn to value truth

If children live with fairness, they learn equality and trust

If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect

If children live with security, they learn to have confidence in themselves

Sponsored Walk
On 23rd September we’ll be holding our sponsored walk event in the afternoon. The walk will take place on the school grounds and the money raised will go towards developing an allotment area in school. It is important to give children the opportunity to grow their own fruit and veg and to develop the idea of organic gardening. This will be a really worthwhile project, which will be used as a learning resource in school in a variety of ways. We’d like to include the wider community in this project - so it will be really exciting. The children will be given more information nearer the time with a covering letter and sponsor forms. If you would like to take part in the walk do come and join us - the more the merrier!

Healthy Tuckshop
Just to let you know that our healthy tuck shop has started up. Children will be able to buy pure orange juice (20p per carton) and a variety of fruit and raisins (ranging in price between 10p and 15p)

Stationery Shop
The year 6’s will be running a stationery shop that sells a variety of high quality stationery essentials at knock down prices. The children have the responsibility of ordering the equipment and keeping accounts.

Breakfast Club
Breakfast club will be starting up again on Monday 12th September. We all know the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and research has shown that children can concentrate better as it prevents low energy levels. The club starts at 8.15 and costs £1.25 a day. For this the children can have a selection of cereals, toast, hot chocolate and fruit, with bacon sandwiches on a Wednesday and Friday (pre-booked and paid in advance). This represents excellent value for money as it also includes childcare provision. The children once they have finished their breakfast are able to play a variety of games in the hall until the morning session begins. Payment is made on a daily basis – no need to book a place – just come along. If you would like to try our breakfast, come and join us.

French Trip
Because we will be teaching French throughout school what could be better than a trip to France to practice our new skills! What we are going to do is to arrange for a family trip to Bologne at the end of the Easter Term, 6th & 7th April. The idea we have in mind is for a family outing, a visit to Bologne and a hypermarket. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and the costings at the moment will be between £35/£40 per seat on the coach. Details are being finalised at the moment and obviously we’ll send out another letter asking for some ideas of numbers. We’ll set up some savings scheme so that the money doesn’t have to be paid all at once. So have a think and then let us know.

Clubs
At the moment we’re busy sorting out school clubs that the children can take part in and we’ll send a letter home once the choices have been finalised.

Help
Parents/Carers/Grandparents are always welcome into school to help with a variety of activities. So if you have an hour or so to spare we’d really appreciate your input. This could include taking small groups for sewing, helping with art activities, gardening etc. etc.
