Dear Parents / Carers

As I write this newsletter in my office the school is unusually quiet – the reason being that this week is not only SAT’S week for our year 6’s but also assessment week throughout school. The information from these tests will inform the teachers of the progress your child has made and obviously this information will be discussed with you at parents evening (see dates at the end of this letter) and commented on in your child’s report. Plans are well on their way concerning our whole school topic after half term related to Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies. Our focus will not only be on keeping fit and healthy but we will also be working on issues such as first aid, orienteering, hygiene and road safety. It will be a very interesting and energetic half term. We will send out more details once everything has been finalised to keep you in touch.

Celebration Time
Our football team has gone from strength and have won the cup beating Breadsall Hill Top Juniors a resounding 7-1!! The cup is proudly displayed in our entrance – you cannot miss it, as it’s big and gold and very heavy. We are very proud of all the years’ 6’s who played so well and represented our school in a very positive way. They all (including the subs) did brilliantly all through the season so special thanks to them, to Miss Walker for arranging matches, Mr Higgins for all his encouragement and to all the parents who freely gave their time ferrying groups to far flung places around Derby. Really pleased with contribution from the two girls in the team ( Siobhan and Jade ) - a real achievement.

Lea Green
The year’s 4 have just returned from their weekend away at Lea Green. They had a thoroughly enjoyable time (the mud walk up to the waist was popular!) and arrived safely back on Sunday afternoon very tired. The children (and adults who went with them) haven’t stopped talking about their adventure. Many thanks to all the adults who made this trip possible by giving up their weekend to accompany the children. Mrs Partington, Mr Darby, Mrs Hodgetts, Mrs Taylor and Miss Lloyd are still recovering, they are still tired but full of praise for the children who went. They were all true ambassadors for us as a school and for you as parents.

Scarecrow Competition
This was a huge success with loads of really inventive ideas. Miss Hurt’s class had the difficult task of choosing the winner’s from each year group. We’ve got an Elvis Presley scarecrow (Holly), an alien (Jack), a Hawaiian girl (Amelia) and a chef (Jamie Oliver) from Melissa. Mrs McDonall, one of very talented mid day supervisors will be helping the children make them.

PE Kit
The school council, which consists of elected representatives from each class plus Mrs Langford and Mrs Carter meet on a regular basis to discuss topics that are of concern to the children. One of the issues recently raised by them was the subject of our PE kit. The children were keen that we had a PE kit uniform, just as we have school uniform for the very same reason – that is to look smart and to move away from the pressure that some children feel under for having the latest England shirt or the trendiest trainers. This was unanimous amongst the school councillors and it was then decided that the matter would be discussed with the classes. As a result it has been decided that the PE kit uniform will be a plain white t-shirt with black shorts and black jogging bottoms for outdoor games. (Come September we will increase the amount of time for PE and games by having 2 x 45 minute sessions a week.) Pump or trainers can be worn for outdoor games. This will not apply to the year 6’s who will be leaving us soon, so it would be unfair to expect you to buy more kit, but children will be strongly encouraged to have the correct kit in September and we’re hoping to phase this in now. Kit can be ordered from school for a very reasonable price. Children are not to borrow kit from other children for hygiene reasons. We will get in touch if your child misses PE and games lessons because they haven’t got PE kit. We are also considering discouraging children wearing trainers for school as from September. I’d welcome any feedback from you regarding this.

Gardening
Is there anybody out there that would like to help us out by doing a little bit of gardening on a regular basis ? We have some flower beds and pots that need weeding – nothing too energetic. It would be really nice to plant some tubs, but we do need a hand. I would be very grateful for any help – so if you have time to spare please get in touch with either myself or your child’s class teacher.

Road Crossing Patrol
There will be 2 vacancies coming up soon (1 at the end of the month and 1 in September). Both are 6hrs 40 mins per week, salary is £5.41 per hour on a 52 week contract. If you are interested and under 70 years of age please contact Linda Harrington at Commercial Services 07971 599 112.
