
Oakwood Junior School Council Policy
Aims:
- To give the pupils the opportunity to be involved in improving school life for everyone.
- To allow the children to become more responsible and actively involved in the decision making process of the school.
- To develop and promote children’s self confidence, social skills and responsible behaviour towards each other and other people.
- To provide opportunities to develop important life skills that promote positive mental health and an understanding of how to contribute effectively to society.
The School Council:
- The School Council will be made up of pupil representatives from each class plus the Link Teacher.
- To be elected pupils in lower school will complete an application form and upper school pupils will submit a letter of application. Short listed pupils will deliver a presentation to their class followed by a secret ballot.
- Newly elected Councillors will have a 3 month trial period.
- Meetings will be held 2 or 3 times each half term, depending on the length of the half term.
- Meetings will take place on the designated day 9.00 – 9.45.
- After each meeting Councillors will report back to their class and get any feedback.
- After initial training some Councillors take on extra roles and responsibilities such as Treasurer or Secretary.
- Minutes of each meeting will be taken and distributed to each class to be displayed on the Council notice board.
- The agenda for meetings will be drawn up the Link Teacher in discussion with other members of staff, School Councillors, governors etc.
