Dear Parents / Carers

I hope you all had a good break over Easter. The weather could have been a bit kinder, but Summer is around the corner so they’ll be plenty of sunny days to look forward to! Two new members of staff have started this term – Miss Hurt who is teaching the Year 3 and Miss Lloyd in Year 4. Both teachers have settled in very quickly and are enjoying their new classes.

Our open evening related to ‘The World in our School’ was a huge success. All the hard work put into making this an evening to remember was well worth it. There are so many people to thank ranging from all the adults who work in the school, to governors, parents and helpers, the children themselves – the list just goes on. The atmosphere was brilliant and I know the children were very proud of themselves and their work that they had the opportunity to share with you. We had so many thank you letters and cards and I hope you saw the page spread in the Derby Evening Telegraph. We’ve put together photographs and samples of work in a big book that is outside my office. Do have a look through if you’re passing. On a personal note I felt very proud to be the head of a school with such a hardworking, dedicated team of people and such a brilliant, enthusiastic group of children!

Nature Area
Over Easter we had work done to our nature area. This part of the school field has been neglected for a long while – the fence was broken, it was well over grown and really wasn’t used for anything, so… as part of a longer term project the weeds have been cleared, the trees pruned and grass seed planted. I’m hoping that this will then open up the whole area (which is really quite substantial) and can be used as a quiet shady place for the children to sit during hot, sunny days. Ultimately I would like wild flowers (like bluebells) to be planted and nesting boxes put up. It would be really nice to have some seating in there too in time – that will be phase 2. This is the reason why we had our scarecrow homework this weekend – I’m really looking forward to seeing some of these.

Cloakrooms
The finishing touches have been done to finish off improving our cloakroom areas. The amount of hanging space has increased (so fewer coats on the floor!), sinks have been replaced and new flooring laid – so it’s looking very posh.

School Gardens
At the moment I’m looking into the possibility of setting up a school garden / allotment in the school grounds. We’d like to design a plot with raised beds where the children could grow vegetables organically. This will be a big project and at the moment we’re looking at a number of possibilities for funding this. A school garden would really present an exciting extra dimension to the school curriculum. Let me know what you think.
Whilst talking about growing things, the pots that are located on the playground are looking a real treat. These were planted up by some children and their parents back in the Autumn, so all their hard work was really worth it as the pots have made a huge difference to our school grounds.

Sainsbury's Vouchers
We are saving these vouchers - I think we’ve got just over a thousand at the moment. I’ve looked through the catalogue and they’ve got some really good games and sports equipment, that’s worth saving up for. Thanks to everyone who’s handed their’s in – further contributions would be really welcome.
We are also collecting the Tesco vouchers – so if you have any of those they too will be gratefully received.
